Ivan Brunetti  7 characters Download ☆ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB  Ivan Brunetti Cartooning Philosophy and Practice characters À 7 From the editor of Yale's Anthology of Graphic Fiction Cartoons and True Stories a smart and charming guide to the art of cartooning The best cartooning is efficient visual storytelling it is as much a matter of writing as it is of drawing In this book noted cartoonist and illustrator Ivan Brunetti presents fifteen distinct lessons on the art of cartooning guiding his readers through wittily writ. Beautifully written beautifully structured little bookDrawing is fundamentally important for Brunetti and particularly as with Lynda Barry doodling The humblest kind of drawingI find this heartening not because I m a nostalgic old fogey who mourns and moans about the diminishment of drawing in art teaching I m not and I don t the fundamental art skill nowadays is photo manipulation and not drawing lets be honest but that doesn t mean drawing doesn t have value in the practice of an individual artist However Brunetti and Barry are great because they come from a slightly different angle They re not asking us to value the doodle because they re coming from the RomanticModernist position of privileging the untutored the child like the naive They re coming from the tradition of cartooning where minimalism dynamic drawing and images realised in clear simple lines is an actual traditionThe first lesson in this book is the the most mind blowing for me I can t wait to try it out on studentsYou draw a car in 3 4 minutes You repeat this in 2 minutes then 1 minute then 30 secs then 5 secs Then Brunetti says you examine the spectrum of drawings the objective is that you become aware of the universal latent symbolic visual mnemonic language that is comics Brunetti says You will probably surprise yourself as you spontaneously create these simple icons pictograms really that still convey all the essential information about somethingThe point is we are learning to communicate We re learning a languagePossibly that sounds very obvious to you but I ve never been taught that before Or perhaps I wasn t listening when that was being taughtIt s not simplicity for aesthetic reasons primarily It s simplicity for efficiency of communicationAlso another bit that was exciting for me Brunetti talks about how we discover our voice or style by examining our doodles Style here isn t something that is decided beforehand as a process of reasoning but is something that is pre existing and is pulled out of a page of doodles like detective work Who are you What kind of artist are you Look for the ualities that are consistent what makes your visual handwriting different or uniue Embrace that It reminds me of that uote by Robert Stevenson where he talks about cultivating his eccentricities Having said that Brunetti has a slightly Protestant I m certain he s not protestant acetic aesthetic he s very much about not being showy or excessive He uotes Saul Steinberg saying never exaggerate needlessly as when one gives too much importance to a person or too much love or an excessive tipCould you be too much yourselfStill I love this idea of someone looking through a page of doodles like a gold prospector looking through mud for some hints of goldHa haAnyway this book made me very happy and got me very excited I ve moved onto his ComicsEasy As ABC his book for kids It looks eually fantastic

Lynda Barry led me to this compact course in a book Things I will try to remember is that the early exercises can be used to break out of artist s block and an exercise to blend the style s of two artists one I love and one I hate McSweeney s uarterly Concern 13 would be a good resource for the latterOther things I highlighted One can be a good instructor despite not necessarily being a great talent in that field A good teacher essentially brings out good work from the students or rather points the students toward wringing good work from themselvesWhat is cartooning ultimately but a consistent and identifiable system of communicative marks expressing our uniue experience of lifeWhen drawing characters uickly from memory one can be uite inaccurate almost as if one is inventing new characters and these mistakes can serve as the basis for new character designs This allows students to see their own styles clearly A page full of these doodles can help a student discern certain ualities that are consistent within his or her set of drawings These ualities are a clue as to what makes one s particular visual handwriting different or uniue and these should be embraced by the student Art Spiegelman once told me of a uote by Picasso Style is the difference between a circle and the way you draw itWe must not force style upon our artwork but rather let it grow of its own volition from the totality of our influences and abilities or inabilities as the case may be When style is not the natural outcome the outgrowth of all these things we have instead a repugnant off putting mannerism From Walter Murch s In the Blink of an Eye Always try to do the most with the least with the emphasis on trySuggestion is always effective than exposition Past a certain point the effort you put into wealth of detail the you encourage the audience to become spectators rather than participantsAdmittedly art is somewhat like spit It does not repulse or even worry us while it is still inside of us but once it exits our body it becomes disgusting
