Review ¿ A Shadow of a Dream ↠ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB Solving a murder is never an easy matter even when circumstances are ideal For Basil circumstances are far from ideal Because the murder is fa. 3 35 stars A fun fantasy mystery with some very enjoyable characters but with a somewhat confusing plotThe story focuses on Basil who is part of a police force called The Order that solves mysteries and crimes related to supernatural beings like witches mages fae etc Being supernatural is pretty bad in this world and Basil is forced to hide his own latent abilities while he works cases otherwise he might join the criminals in the Order s prison catacombs Complicating things is a shadowy thief who finds Basil completely fascinating and takes it upon himself to call dibs on Basil and connect them both through a magical mind bond Not having asked for this gift Basil is less than enthusedat firstWhat I liked I dug the characters a lot both Basil and his flamboyant thief courter Cheshire They have fun chemistry and I did like seeing tightly contained Basil loosen up a little due to Cheshire s shameless and determined flirtingI m also a SUCKER for a mind bond trope LOVE IT GIMME MORE So I totally dug that twistLike Carter s other book Dragon Slayer it s also a fun read in a light fantasy setting Reading it I definitely got a vibe that was similar to Megan Derr s very enjoyable Dance with the Devil series Not that their identical not at all but they have a similar tone so I can see those who like Dance with the Devil could probably transition pretty easily to this worldWhat was harder for me I really enjoyed the beginning and I didn t mind that Carter s style was to throw you into the pool There isn t tons of explanation or background I don t mind that usually it keeps the pace up and keeps you guessing But I ll be honest and say that I got pretty confused as one mystery shifted into another and I wasn t always understanding what was going on or whyThe story also was a serial fiction which you can feel in its somewhat episodic nature I think there might have needed to be a really strong content edit after the serial was finished because it didn t feel very smooth as a novel There were also some continuity errors that added to the confusion One example that I can remember is Basil s disappearing guns near the end of the book He has them taken away at the catacombs but he gets them back in the woods he then flees and ends up in a predicament he mentally wishes his guns hadn t been taken away at the catacombs he s later shooting his guns etc The ending is alsolike an ending It s HFN but it wraps up in a way that made me feel like Is that the end Will there be another serial There isn t a continuation now Maybe there will be one later but it made the ending somewhat unsatisfying although again safely HFNOut of Carter s two novels Dragon Slayer is my favorite and I think a stronger work That one was also a serial but the storyline felt strongly tied throughout and I didn t feel as confused while reading itI do think Carter excels at creating fun fantasy worlds and very engaging characters and relationships I like both the leads in Dragon Slayer and in this book If you like mm fantasy you may want to give this a try And at 75000 words it s a nicely long novelIf you re wondering which Carter book to try first I would vote for Dragon Slayer This was also a nice read although sometimes frustrating I dig her style though and I will definitely read What Was Man Created For? Review ¿ A Shadow of a Dream ↠ eBook, PDF or Kindle ePUB R complicated than at first it seems and before he can even begin to solve it Basil must contend with a council that refuses to listen to him. Meh Third limited yet none of the interior monologue that would give this piece and this character for that matter character It makes for a rather bloodless sort of read DNF ed at first then went back to it My issues after I went back were with the way the charactersplot was handled so either the narration issue got better or I got used to it or I was able to ignore it Additional comments below the original belowRunning commentaryThe main problem with anything out of LT3 is I look for Derr level writing and most of the other authors haven t uite got Derr s charm and elouence with the fairy tale genre It makes reading feel uncomfortably like reading second rate Derr for me it s the goddamn layout that makes me feel this way I just know itThis story starts offconfusing It takes a while for it to explain everything backstory wise and in the meantime you kind of have to just nod and smile and move on seeing as we have no other choiceThe sort of character dynamic the author s trying for could also do with stuck upstandoffish ness from the LI and scathing sarcasm from the MC even if it s just internal seeing as it s third person limited actually might be better if it were would fit the character better As is it s a bit lukewarmAlso odd usage of a colon is odd Seriously It s okay to use a period there At the very least it should probably be a semi colon They re two separate sentencesEh Obvious writing is obvious Makes narration blahIf a man is pretty then no need to say though his features were far too fine to make him handsome Leave off the though and that sentence is so much better ie He was pretty his features far too fine to make him handsome Still a bit diffuse but no longer seemingly contradictoryO god Wow Man has flower in hat How did flower get into hat Good job MC You re asking the real uestions here The uestion of a lifetimeYou know what He did it He found it The uestion The uestion to Life the Universe and Everything the answer of which is 42 The uestion is How did Mirza Delano get a real lily onto his hat Everybody can go home now We solved the universeNo fool Duke Uncle MC s name isn t Mirza Mirza s name is MirzaWait I wasn t going to uote but I need to now Mirza Rutland scolded before Basil could decide whether or not to answerWas asshole MC really considering not answering For what possible reason He has no reason not to answer other than to be a pretentious asshole What the fuck manEh Unfunny bantering is unamusingThat awkward moment when I m mentally writing in my own character development into the narrationEh This following scene makes sense with my mental addendum Without it it comes off as blah and wtfAUTHOR NOW IS THE TIME FOR SEMI COLON NOT COMMA COMMA CREATES COMMA SPLICE COMMA SPLICE IS BAD BAD BAD BAD I USE IT WHEN I RAMBLE WHICH IS NOT A GOOD SIGN NOT THAT AUTHOR COULD KNOW BUT STILLO hey look hello 236am Nice to meet you cough cough fine see you againNo I refuse to accept that Why can MC sense this guy is lying I don t accept that as something I should just accept I demand to know why He didn t know why is insufficient a reason to explain away this coincidentally too convenient sixth senseGDI The plot has started and I still don t knowget wtf the premise behind MC is supposed to be Something something taboo something publically disliked because of shit he couldn t control something something wait why is he sniffing Does he have magical olfactory sense ApparentlyGah See this explanation could have been stuck in when you had the MC and guy assigning assignment fail bantering about stuff Since you didn t bother explain anything that was basically useless and now you had to interrupt plotty stuff for explanation All you did earlier was create confusion Confusion tension YeeshJFC this is dry D where s the MC s thoughts The tidbits that create the character and give the piece charm So dispassionateEh Nope Can t do it nope910Haha jk I went backI skipped what I d read and I think part of what i didn t and went from there It s not bad I guess I got to the point where I could ignore most stuff bothering meOne thingHunters do not die of young agesurely you mean old Yes in fact author does mean oldAnd yet it says young How bizarreOh there s Yes it bothers me that everyone wants to fuck the MC Like wow he s so magically desirable everyone wants to hit thatCon tThe Cheshire cat thing is meh for me I mean I love making hokey allusions with the best of them but eh Alice is one that I find hard to pull off without getting too hokey not unless your whole thing is Alice verse basedAlso all of the mental dialogue gets really distracting because it s formatted like regular dialogue instead of in italics like it used to be I don t like it because it makes me unsure what s mind speak and what s actually being said out loudI know what it is The character dynamics in this is constructed like a shojo romance ex pariah MC sudden appearance of several hot LI s all of em want MC MC is strangely drawn to each of them but with an insidious hint of yaoi Your words say no but your body says yesI think what bothers about this in general is the construction isn t unsophisticated it s the handling of it that s oversimplified Annoyingly so Alexander isn t a bad guy so why Basil should be so incredibly vindicated makes little sense to me It wouldn t bother me if it weren t for that glimmer of self awareness that manifests now and again If it weren t for that I d be able to write it off as consummate pulp and ignore all of the oversimplifications and whatnot but the character constructions are actually uite complex in a post conventional sort of way Gah It s like Stage 5 s thinking their Stage 4 s and persisting in acting that way If they were actually Stage 4 s I d be lenient and feel better about leaving things be but I get the sense that they re actually Stage 5 s even if they don t realize or refuse to realize and that s incredibly frustrating for me to sit through Gah Pisses me off because Basil has the potential to act so much Stage 5 even in the midst of his denial and yet he s written as a melodramatic socionormal idiot

After re reading this one my thoughts have not changed substantially The universe is compelling though a bit inconsistent Basil and his adventures remained very worthwhile and Cheshire is certainly intriguing I feel strongly that a seuel is needed to explore many unanswered uestions about Basil s origins as well as his blooming relationship with Cheshire39 stars This book captured my attention from the very beginning and kept me thoroughly engaged until the end I think fans of Megan Derr s series Dance with the Devil might enjoy this one as well The world building was intricate with some very interesting original twists Basil he was strong yet vulnerable and so kind I really liked himNevertheless I believe a couple of things should be noted The plot was mostly action driven and unfolded different mysteries which Basil solved gradually leading to his character development Thus the romance played a secondary role and I was a bit disappointed by it particularly due to the other protagonist ShadowCheshire He felt too capricious and sometimes narrow minded not revealing any great depth of feelings for Basil a part of these aspects could be attributed to his view spoilerfae nature hide spoiler
